Drafting
Timber frame design and documentation — from the first sketch to fabrication-ready drawings.
Good drawings are the difference between a frame that goes together cleanly and one that doesn't. After years working both sides — in the shop and at the drafting table — I understand what a crew actually needs to see on paper, and what causes problems when it's missing. That perspective is what I bring to every drafting engagement.
Conceptual Development
Before committing to engineering and permits, it helps to see the frame take shape on paper. Early-stage conceptual work — preliminary layouts, 2D floor plans, 3D views — lets you test ideas quickly without expensive changes downstream.
This is where we work through bay spacing, ridge height, species selection, and joinery approach. The goal is to arrive at a scheme you're confident in before we put it in front of an engineer.
Permit & Engineered Drawings
We produce the full package for permit submission — floor plans, elevations, sections, and connection details. These drawings are coordinated with your structural engineer and drawn to the standard that building departments actually need, not what looks good in a portfolio.
If you're working with an architect who needs a timber specialist to handle the structural timber documentation, that's a common collaboration we're set up for.
Piece Drawings & Shop Documents
Piece drawings are the documents that a timber framer actually uses in the shop — individual member layouts, joint locations, dimensions, and cut lists. Getting these right means less waste, fewer mistakes on the shop floor, and a raise that goes smoothly.
We produce piece drawings for our own fabrication work, and also as a standalone service for framers who prefer to do their own cutting but want better documentation to work from.
