A sauna or bathhouse is a small building that has to take heat, moisture, and a lot of use in a tight footprint. The timber frame is the bones. Enclosure, stove, benches, and lining are another trade. We design and cut the frame, we can raise it, and we draft it for the people who finish the room.
In central Virginia and Northern Virginia these buildings show up beside a house, down a path, or as part of a backyard that already has a pavilion or a porch. They are rarely the whole project. That's fine. We will work on the timber piece and leave the rest to the GC, the sauna builder, or the owner.
We do not sell a sauna kit SKU. The one live kit on this site is the Nelson Cottage. A sauna is custom or kit-scale custom: small, specific, and drawn for the pad you have.
What we actually build
The offer is a timber frame — posts, beams, plates, rafters — with mortise-and-tenon joinery, cut by hand or CNC, and pegged. Scale is usually modest. The questions that matter are span, roof, how the frame meets the foundation, and how the enclosure will hang off the timber. Heat and steam belong to the people lining the room. We stay in our scope unless you hire us for more.
If you already have a sauna designer, send their drawings. If you don't, a sketch, a footprint, and where it sits on the land is enough to start.
Kit-scale thinking, custom cutting
A small rectangular frame with a simple roof is kit-scale work even when it isn't a catalog product. That's often the right sauna: not a miniature house, not a glass box, a timber room you can raise without a circus. When the site, the roof pitch, or the way it ties to a porch or pavilion won't take that, we draw a custom frame. Both live on Craft.
Don't force a cottage kit into a sauna. The Nelson Cottage is an 800-square-foot house frame. If you want that building and a sauna later, say so. They're different jobs.
Species and joinery
Douglas Fir, White Oak, Yellow Cedar, Cypress. We prefer local and regional timber. For a sauna frame, species is about movement, durability, and how the wood will live next to a hot, wet room — not a finish sample. We'll talk that through. Joinery stays traditional: mortise-and-tenon, pegged. The frame should still be a frame when the benches have been rebuilt.
Raising and drafting
Raising a small frame is still a raising. Sequence, temporary bracing, and a plan for the day matter more than the square footage. We can run that day or write it for a builder who has raised timber before.
Drafting is often the whole engagement. Architects, GCs, sauna companies, and DIY owners hire us for permit drawings, shop drawings, and piece tickets so someone else can cut or so the county can read the set. That's drafting. We do that work for other framers too.
Who this is for
Owners in central Virginia and Northern Virginia (and farther, for a kit-scale frame that ships) who want timber they can see, not a vinyl shed with a stove in it. Builders who need a timber sub with drawings. It is not a turnkey sauna package. Stove, lining, electrical, and plumbing stay with you or your other trades.
